A comprehensive higher education institution, with around 6% (around 1000) international students out of a total of 15000, West University of Timişoara is constantly striving to create a substantially authentic, interdisciplinary and international environment for our yearly incoming cohorts of undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates. To this end, we count on a number of almost 700 academic and 400 administrative staff. Our connection to the pre-university medium of education in Romania, through a specific office focused specifically on this matter, allows us to recruit and cater to the needs of the exact future students who need us the most. Our curricula for any study programme includes foreign language courses, internships and transversal courses, a unique initiative that aims to offer students the opportunity to choose a „minor” specialization. We also host numerous international lecturers and cultural centers and offer opportunities for continuous training to our academic and non-academic staff.
An important part of WUT’s current internationalisation strategy is connected to our membership to the UNITA European Alliance (alongside Universita degli Studi di Torino – Italy, Università degli Studi di Brescia – Italy, Universidad de Zaragoza – Spain, Universidad Pública de Navarra – Spain, Universidade da Beira Interior – Portugal, Instituto Politécnico da Guarda – Portugal, Université Savoie Mont Blanc – France, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour – France, Universitatea Transilvania Brasov – Romania), supported by the European Commission within the Erasmus European Universities initiative.
In the framework of our over 550 European and global partners under the Erasmus+ umbrella we implement international mobility projects with Programme and Partner Countries on a yearly basis and ensure a 1:1 scale for incoming-outgoing mobilities for studies and placement (between 250-300 students incoming and 250-300 students outgoing, yearly). Additionally, under the same Erasmus umbrella, we organise over 200 incoming and 200 outgoing staff mobilities every year and we implement tens of other Erasmus+ projects (Key Action 2- Strategic Partnerships, Capacity Building, Policy Reform, Jean Monnet, Sports, Knowledge Alliances, Youth). Moreover, WUT’s research teams develop multiple national and international research projects.
The university’s strong focus on quality in an increasingly competitive and globalized academic world is acknowledged in international rankings worldwide. For example, Times Higher Education University Rankings 2022, ranked 1201+ in 2022; Round University Ranking, ranked 626 in 2022; Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, Physics, ranked 301-400 in 2022; QS Global World University Rankings, ranked 1001+ in 2021; Emerging Europe and Central Asia University Rankings, ranked 94 in 2022; Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings, ranked 401-500 in 2021; UI Green Metric World University Ranking, ranked 652 in 2020; QS Rankings By Subject, Modern Languages, ranked 251-300 in 2018.
Last, but not least, as Timişoara was the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2023, with WUT being an important partner in many of the activities connected to this endeavor, we strongly believe that the socio-cultural dimension of a European University would benefit from our contribution in this sense.
